Date: 2007-02-16 21:37:41 Darryl Dalcerri ( dalcerridieselrepair@verizon.net / no homepage) wrote: For years Cabrillo High School has had to use a field clear across town for football games. Perhaps no more. Parents at the school have organized a booster club with designs on building a stadium at the Vandenberg Village campus comparable to Lompoc High School's Huyck Stadium. Organizers want to build the stadium partly on state-owned land where the existing track and field and are. The nonprofit booster club would oversee funding and construction. They hope to have the $3 million to $5 million stadium, with an all new all-weather track and bleachers, ready for 2009 graduation ceremonies. But first comes the money. Ramona Rogers, Cabrillo PTSA president and parent of two Cabrillo students, is spearheading an effort which began in recent weeks to determine whether the ambitious project is feasible. She said the new booster club would be looking to raise money through corporate sponsorships, alumni and foundations as well as individual donations. Rogers said Lompoc Unified School District Superintendent Frank Lynch supports the stadium plan and suggested coordinators research the plan of a recently updated sports stadium at Santa Ynez Valley Union High School. Rogers said she also hopes construction is done in conjunction with 2007 modernization work at the high school. The group is also working with county officials to secure land to the rear of the school from the state in order to place bleachers. Rogers said the new field would enhance the sense of pride at the school and accommodate community events in same manner as Huyck at Lompoc High. Such a facility is long overdue, she said. “It will be more comfortable because we currently only have one set of bleachers and a lot of people have to sit in chairs on the field,” she said. “This would allow way more room for people. We've also had some world class athletes who have graduated from Cabrillo and they've had to train on a clay track. When other teams have come to the school they're here running on something out of the `60s.” Past efforts to build a stadium at Cabrillo High School have failed, but Principal Betty McCallum agreed that the athletic field needs expansion. “I think that Cabrillo community has talked about this before and now we have a group of highly motivated people to get things going,” McCallum said. She added, “I think this just adds to the spirit and culture at Cabrillo, which is already pretty positive and hard-working. I think it's odd we don't have a stadium. Most high schools have their own stadium and I can't think of any local high schools that don't.” The new stadium has yet to be named. For more information, or to help the Cabrillo High School stadium effort, call Ramona Rogers at 737-8924, or e-mail rogers@prucc.com. Neil Nisperos can be reached at 737-1059 or nnisperos@lompoc record.com. |

My embarrassing claim to fame is when my sister & I got into a fight in the school cafeteria the first week we were there, such an embarrassing moment. Maybe no one remembers! and that would be great too. I currently live in Sacramento, CA. I am the mother of two beautiful daughters, and the proud grandmother of five very busy grandsons. Divorced and loving it. I am looking forward to hearing, reading about and maybe seeing some the people from my school days. I hope to attend the next class reunion. If there are any mailing lists out there for Cabrillo, please add me to the list. Thanks! Hello to all and may your blessing be many! Take care! Peace! |

We know how hard it is to get something this big started but since we've already done the hard work, we've decided to make it easier on the rest of you and wish to extend this invitation to all of you who graduated in the 70's. This includes the years 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979! Wouldn't it be fantastic to mingle with all of your friends from years past! A dinner/dance will be held at the Elk's Lodge in Lompoc on Saturday, July 2, but there will also be an ice breaker social July 1 and a picnic to bring your families to on July 3. All you have to do is either go to the Reunion page on Classmates.com and look up the 1975 Cabrillo Class Reunion info page and RSVP with your address; or email me, Helen Luppa or Jeff Bensen with your address. It's that simple. In turn, you will be sent a flyer on all of the info regarding the reunion, the cost, how to RSVP, etc. This should be fun so don't miss out!! |

I've enjoyed reading about what you have been doing! Now, how about writing the same thing in the "Directory" so others can read about you? :> When visiting "classmates.com" recently, I noticed the complaints about their fees. If you are a member of "classmates", please write a message there to let people know we have this free site. I believe "classmates" filters out web addresses, so you will need to write tis site's address as: "cabrillohigh then add dot com". Thanks, Warren |
